What do we do with "other" music?

Abstract

The necessity to disrupt, interfere and intervene with musical canons is
indisputable. But once we have rethought the canon and found space for
different musics to be taught, heard and engaged with in education and
performance contexts, there remains the challenge and the question: How do
we approach and hold these musics and the cultures they bring with them?
That is, what do we actually do with ‘other’ music? This lab session consists of
three activations by the rapper Esra Özmen, the Ensemble Interactivo de la
Habana and members of the Department of Music Education Research and
Practice/ Elemental Music Pedagogy. Each activation explores these questions
and addresses the notion of musical hierarchies. Moving away from a lecture
or panel format, these interactive artistic activations invite conference
participants to consider and experience the practical implications of ‘other’
musics, including problem solving and reflecting upon their current
positionalities and music-making points of view
