Abstract
In convential agriculture large amounts of fertilizers and plant-treatment and pest-control agents are used for maintaining the yield. The latter substances do not remain on the application sites but run through various pathways into surface waters or other media. They can have harmful effects on the aquatic ecosystems and on human health. Therefore, environmental monitoring of these substances is necessary. In every federal state of Germany, institutions exist for the monitoring of water resources.
