    Abstract

    From the perspective of mediatization theory the use of an online game is inves-
    tigated in the context of everyday routine. The analysis focuses on the meaning of games but not as solely representing something beyond everyday life and thus taking into consideration the numerous transgressions of gameplay. Building upon a media ethnographic-oriented approach the study shows how the browser game Hattrick is not only embedded in the daily routines of users, but also at the same time closely connected with other aspects of the everyday world through different communicative practices. The empirical results of this pilot study are substantiated on the basis of three key categories (construction of social relationships, integration strategies and emotional and mental transfer effects).
