    Abstract

In contrast to traditional nature conservation approaches, biosphere reserves aim not only to protect nature from humans but to include human actors in shaping nature. The paper analyses this integrative aspiration. Two approaches - contractual nature conservation and regional marketing - are discussed from a social-ecological perspective. The results clarify that the sustainable development of regions needs a fundamental reorientation of economy.
