Abstract
Vocational education and training (VET) plays a key role in the societal sustainability transformation. Although VET trainers are central actors in this process, there is a lack of empirical studies on the competence requirements for them. This article presents a competence model for the facets of VET trainers' action competence on the empirical basis of 22 expert interviews. The competence model makes the competence of trainers tangible, which is required to implement the respective sustainability strategy in companies in the financial services and information technology industries. As a result, sustainability competence is not an independent area of competence, but an integral part of a future-oriented professional action competence. This is reflected in a variety of ways in specialist, personal, social and methodological skills. The dimensions influence each other and ultimately lead to an action competence that enables the application of knowledge in authentic business situations and combines declarative, procedural, strategic, and schematic knowledge.
