Abstract
Ethnic discrimination continues to be a problem in recruitment in general and in access to vocational training in particular. This situation has not changed despite relevant conditions such as the shortage of skilled workers and demographic change. Against this background, this article examines the factors that
determine ethnic discrimination in company selection procedures for access to dual vocational training in Germany. Answering this question requires a systematic overview of ethnic discrimination processes.
Methodologically, the approach employs a systematic literature review (Page et al., 2021). The results of the study illustrate the mechanisms of action of various factors (including cultural and social capital, gender, sector) that influence access to vocational training. In company selection processes, the fit between the applicant and the company plays a particularly central role, whereby the assessment of this fit is negatively influenced by preference-based and statistical discrimination. The article brings together and systematizes previously fragmented findings on ethnic discrimination during the transition to dual
vocational training, and places them within an integrated analytical framework. On this basis, it becomes apparent how individual, organizational and structural factors interact in the recruitment process and exacerbate the risks of discrimination. In doing so, the article makes an analytical contribution to a better understanding of the mechanisms of ethnic inequality in the context of workplace selection decisions.
