Abstract
Based upon the concept of societal relations to nature the authoress questions the physical-substantial "nature" of areas of wilderness in central Europe in connection with their cultural-symbolic denotation. Ideas and concepts of wilderness are located within the context of socio-ecological transformation processes. The potentials of areas of wilderness is presented as a space of opportunity for sustainable development.
