Abstract

With a focus on Participatory Design (PD) processes, this paper explores the integration of Virtual Reality (VR) tools and mixed-media applications in participatory workshop scenarios. It investigates the initial challenges and lessons learned during the workshop implementation of a German digital public participation project called PaKOMM. The research presents observations gathered during a workshop for an urban public space in Hamburg, entailing questions about mobility issues. By focusing on key challenges such as technical issues, user familiarity with VR tools and accessibility, the study highlights the importance of addressing these challenges to create an inclusive and immersive experience for residents, while encouraging critical reflection on the influence of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) on a participatory planning project. Through navigating users' experiences, the research aims to provide insights into the use of ICT within PD processes, promoting a collaborative and inclusive approach to the design of public spaces.
