Abstract

This paper gives an overview over the use of longitudinal data for establishments and enterprises from surveys performed by the statistical offices in empirical economic research. It sketches the developments in this field since 1990, introduces the different types of data, and describes selected projects that use the data. Furthermore, problems related to the work with these data inside the research data centers of the statistical offices are discussed, and two alternative scenarios of future developments are outlined.
