Competencies and Attitudes of Students - Grade 4-7 (KESS 4-7)

The study recorded key aspects of competence levels in German, mathematics, science and English as well as students' attitudes to learning at school at the end of elementary school in Hamburg. The aim of the study was to gain insights into the competence levels that students have reached at the end of fourth grade and with which they transfer to secondary schools. In addition, the students as well as parents, teachers and principals were interviewed in order to examine the framework conditions of learning at school. In this context, KESS was linked to the "Aspects of Learning Background and Learning Development (LAU)" and the "Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS)". KESS studies were conducted as longitudinal studies in grades 4, 7, 8, 10/11, and 12/13.

With the longitudinal studies LAU and KESS, the city of Hamburg has generated two data sets since 1995, which allow the systematic analysis of performance development (German, English, mathematics, science, partly Latin) in different subjects from the beginning of lower secondary school to the end of upper secondary school. Both data sets are extremely complex due to the longitudinal study design. This is especially true for the achievement data, since complex anchor item designs with linking items within and between survey full stops are available here.

LAU and KESS have so far been extensively documented in mainly descriptive reports. In addition, the study data offer the opportunity to work on methodological and substantial questions of longitudinal research in greater depth. (IQB)
