The purpose of this paper is to investigate intra-organizational structures of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM). The paper develops a conceptual framework of cross-functional integration with a focus on knowledge transfer.

The word “environmental” is almost always used in the context of human impact on natural systems. This distinguishes it from the word “ecological” which is characterized more by a concept of interdependence of elements within a system. The basic understanding of the term “environmental sustainability” that we wish to set forth is essentially the expansion of the understanding of human environmental activity so as to connect it with the ecological concept of interdependence. Environmental sustainability would then become a subset of ecological sustainability and somewhat of an expansion of concepts like industrial symbiosis. We can see this concept of environmental sustainability serving as a potent goal for environmental managers. The overall conference theme is therefore: “Environmental sustainability and the goal of the environmental manager.” This overall theme will be integrated in various presentations across the five categories listed below . 1. Environmental Manager Qualifications and Credentialing: explores the possibility of establishing requisite skills and credentialing for the professionals. 2. Environmental Performance Measurement: explores performance measurement and examine what we measure and why, what standards of practice exist or are developing, and how we use the results for measurement. 3. The Role of the Environmental Manager: examines the role of the professional within the organization, the industry, the host community, and society. 4. Tools for Environmental Sustainability: explores strategies, measurements, assessments and decision making tools to aid us in our journey to sustainability. 5. Understanding Underlying Assumptions: scrutinizes long-held underlying assumptions of how the world works and determines if they are valid, since our perception of the world affects our responses
