Abstract

Background: Considering the quantity and heterogeneity of digital health information, digital health literacy (dHL) needs to be strengthened at an early stage. The school setting is an ideal place for this, where a health (literacy) promoting environment needs to be created, taking holistic concepts into account. This article describes the development of an online-based self-assessment tool for teachers to analyze organizational conditions for the promotion of dHL. Methods: The tool was developed and subsequently pretested as part of the DURCHBLICKT! project on the basis of a literature review of tools and indicators in the fields of health literacy, school health promotion, digitalization, and school development. Results: The instrument covers five subject areas, each operationalized by three indicators: (1) teaching/curriculum, (2) school staff, (3) school and organizational development, (4) extracurricular environment, and (5) media equipment and use. The data are evaluated at the level of the individual indicators and along the thematic areas. The automated and results include an overview chart as well as a detailed and prioritized overview of the results. Discussion and conclusion: With the development of this tool, teachers can determine the current implementation status of the organizational dHL for the first time. It expands the existing discussion on dHL by including the organizational perspective and addressing the school environment, thus, enabling suitability for existing structures.
