Werdegang

Emi­ly Black is a Ph.D. stu­dent in Eng­lish lin­gu­is­tics and in­ter­lan­gua­ge prag­ma­tics at the In­sti­tu­te of Eng­lish Stu­dies. She holds a first class MA de­gree in Ap­p­lied Lin­gu­is­tics and In­ter­cul­tu­ral Com­mu­ni­ca­ti­on from Es­sex Uni­ver­si­ty, Eng­land. She also has five ye­ars of ex­pe­ri­ence teaching con­ver­sa­tio­nal EFL and trai­ning EFL teachers in Ja­pan. Her stu­dy uses data from the Lan­gua­ge LINC cor­pus (Lan­gua­ge Lear­ners in IN­ter­ac­tion Cor­pus). Lan­gua­ge LINC is a collec­tion of re­cor­dings of Sky­pe mee­tings bet­ween Ger­man stu­dents stu­dy­ing busi­ness Eng­lish at Leu­pha­na and Irish stu­dents stu­dy­ing busi­ness Ger­man at Tri­ni­ty Col­le­ge Dub­lin. Stu­dents met with their part­ners five times over the cour­se of the se­mes­ter via Sky­pe to com­ple­te learning tasks for their re­spec­tive lan­gua­ge clas­ses. Ap­p­ly­ing a Con­ver­sa­ti­on Ana­ly­tic ap­proach to a selec­tion of the­se re­cor­dings, the pro­ject in­ves­ti­ga­tes both the small talk and the task se­quen­ces in the Eng­lish por­ti­on of the­se con­ver­sa­ti­ons and con­trasts the se­quen­ti­al stra­te­gies em­ploy­ed by the Irish and Ger­man par­ti­ci­pants.
